技術說明

一種可將非偏極化入射光轉換成線偏振出光的裝置,同時具有高能量利用效率。此裝置的核心是由數個稜鏡所組合而成的偏振轉換單元,而其中一個稜鏡面有鍍上一層偏振分光膜。該偏振分光膜讓非偏極化的入射光分為穿透的線偏振光以及反射的偏振光,此兩種光線偏振方向彼此正交。接著,穿透的偏振光經過後續數個稜鏡的反射而旋轉其偏振方向與前述反射偏振光一致。最後,藉由多個轉換單元的巧妙排列將兩束相同偏振方向的出光合併而成為一束線偏振光。利用此機制,比起傳統使用吸收式偏振膜而得到單一方向偏振光的方式,使用本元件能夠大幅提升其能量利用率。此偏振轉換單元可以藉由多個單元彼此併聯而無限擴張裝置的寬度,特別適用於大尺寸且薄型的應用場合,如顯示器背光模組。 An apparatus can convert the unpolarized incident light into the linear polarized emitting light with high efficiency by a polarization converter unit which comprises several prisms. Among the prisms, one facet of the one prism is coated with a film that can split the incident light into TE and TM wave; e.g. transmitting TE wave but reflecting TM wave; vice versa. Next, the transmitted light is reflected by the follow-up prisms and its polarization direction is rotated for 90 degrees, same as the TM wave. Finally, by clever arrangement, the transmitted and reflected light are combined again, and become the completely linear polarized emitting light. By this apparatus, polarized light can be obtained with much higher efficient, as compared with the general polarizer absorbing 50% light. The polarization converter unit can be connected each other to extend laterally without limit, which is suitable for the condition with much wider but thinner space, such as backlight.
