快取系統及方法CACHING METHOD AND DATA STORAGE SYSTEM CAPABLE OF PROLONGING SERVICE LIFETIME OF A CACHE MEMORY

快取記憶體的首要功能是加速系統,其次才是保存資料。本發明使快取記憶體的壽命不受保存資料的能力之限制、回歸其加速系統的本質,因此可延長快取記憶體使用壽命。依照先前技術,一旦快取記憶體保存資料的能力有疑慮,使用者就必須汰換快取記憶體,否則系統運作的正確性也會有疑慮。藉由本發明,即便快取記憶體保存資料的能力有疑慮,藉由將錯誤轉換為快取失誤(cache miss)以及動態縮小可用容量技術,使用者仍可繼續使用該快取記憶體,直到快取記憶體加速系統能力不敷使用,才汰換該快取記憶體,因此達到延長快取記憶體壽命的功效。 The insight behind this invention is that the primary functionality of cache memory is to accelerate system performance rather than preserving data. Based on this insight, this invention proposes focusing cache memory's effort on acceleration while preventing cache memory from being limited by the burden of reliably retaining data. According to the state of the art, cache memory must be retired once its capability of reliably retaining data becomes in doubt due to wearout; otherwise, the correctness of the entire system accessing the cache memory is jeopardized. In comparison, this invention exploits the techniques of transforming errors into cache misses and dynamically sacrificing cache capacity to still keep cache alive even when the cache memory cannot reliably retain data. The lifetime of cache memory thus can be prolonged to a point when cache memory's capability of accelerating system performance is insufficient.
