A scalable phased-array system for time-division duplexing (TDD) wireless communications is disclosed in this invention. The proposed architecture utilizes frequency multipliers and low-frequency phase shifters to realize phased-array systems. For the transmitter (TX) design, the proposed frequency multipliers have both frequency multiplication and mixer functions, which is employed to linearly up-convert the baseband signal to the desired band. The high-frequency carrier can be generated by low-frequency IF and LO signals, greatly simplifying the transceiver design. The phase of the desired signal and the phase of the undesired spurs of each TX element can be controlled, respectively, by low-frequency phase-shifters whose phase resolution can be kept without degradation during the process of the frequency multiplications. Hence the output power of the desired signals from each TX element can be combined in space to steer the output beam along the target direction while cancelling the undesired spurs accordingly. For the receiver (RX) design, it adopts an LO phase-shifting architecture. The required LO signal with phase tuning capability is directly provided by the transmitter circuit. Therefore, the phase of each RX of the phased-array systems can be adjusted to receive a signal coming from the target direction. In addition to the proposed innovative phased-array system, a multi-function resonator-coupled network (RCN) is also proposed in this invention. The RCN is able to realize phase-shifting, impedance matching, balun, and signal combing and subtracting functions. This not only saves the chip area, but also greatly reduces the power loss.
